I recently had 3:16 Carpet Cleaning come out to handle our carpets, upholstery, and some tile grout in our home here in St. George. Wow -- what a difference! Our carpets hadn't been professionally cleaned in years and looked brand new afterward -- seriously, like we just installed them. The team was super professional, on time, and explained everything they were doing. I really appreciated that they use eco-friendly, non-toxic products -- safe for our pets and kids, which was a big priority for us. No harsh chemical smells lingering, and everything dried reasonably fast. They even gave great tips on maintenance afterward.

I can't tell you how many carpet cleaners I have used to get my puppy pee stains out of my carpets. This place is certified and has special tools they use for extraction. The best!

Our Process

How We Clean From Start to Finish

Inspection

We inspect the carpet backing, seams, tack strips, and loose areas to assess whether stretching can hold. Failed backing or damaged anchoring may need attention before tension is restored.

Room Clearing

The room needs to be empty for a proper power stretch. We can move light furniture ourselves and ask that closets and larger pieces be cleared before we arrive. Full access lets the power stretcher reach wall to wall without stopping.

Power Stretching

We anchor the power stretcher against the far wall and pull the carpet tight across the room in one pass, then work the edges by hand. Any rusted or loose tack strip gets replaced before we re-tack. Excess carpet is trimmed and tucked clean along every wall.

Final Walkthrough

We walk the room with you to check the carpet lies flat with no soft spots or waves. We point out anything that might need attention down the road, like padding that's wearing thin. Furniture can go back the same day.

Before Your Appointment

What to Expect From Carpet Stretching

Clear the Room First

Furniture has to come out for the power stretcher to reach every wall. We can help move light pieces, but large furniture and closets should be cleared ahead of the visit. A fully clear room gets the tightest, most even stretch.

How Long It Takes

A single room typically takes 45 minutes to an hour and a half depending on size and how much tack strip needs replacing. Larger homes with several rooms take longer. We give a time estimate on the call.

Tack Strip Gets Checked

Rusted or loose tack strip is one of the most common reasons a stretch doesn't hold. We inspect every strip during the job and flag any section that needs replacing before we start. That keeps the quote honest instead of a surprise later.

How Long a Stretch Lasts

A properly executed power stretch holds for years under normal conditions. Carpet bumped into place with a knee kicker tends to loosen again much sooner and need re-stretching within a year or two. We power stretch every job wall to wall and never use a knee kicker.

Tools and technique

Why we only power stretch, wall to wall

A knee kicker uses the installer's knee to bump carpet into place a few inches at a time. It can't load consistent tension across a room, which is why carpet stretched with a knee kicker tends to buckle again within a year or two. That's why we don't use one on any job, big or small.

A power stretcher braces against the far wall with extension poles and uses a hand lever to pull carpet tight across the entire floor in one motion. Most carpet manufacturers require power stretching to keep an installation warranty valid, and it's the only method that produces the even, room-wide tension a buckle repair actually needs.

We run the power stretcher first to set the field, then work every tack strip along the wall before trimming and tucking the edge. If a section of strip is rusted, broken, or pulling loose from the subfloor, we replace it so the new tension has something solid to hold onto.

One visit, two fixes

Carpet stretching and cleaning in the same appointment

A lot of our carpet stretching services in St. George end with a carpet cleaning in the same visit. Rippled carpet usually shows up in rooms that also have traffic lanes, pet spots, or red dirt, and the furniture is already moved, so it makes sense to handle both while the room is open.

Stretching is quoted from $1 per square foot and carpet cleaning prices start at $55 per area, so you can see both numbers before we book. Tell us about both problems when you call or text photos, and we will plan one appointment instead of two.

We serve homes across Utah's Washington County, including St. George, Washington, Santa Clara, Ivins, and Hurricane, and we look at the whole floor before recommending a stretch, a clean, or both.

When stretching isn't the whole fix

What else might need attention

Stretching fixes tension, not padding. If the pad underneath is flattened, cracked, or shows footprints that don't spring back, a stretch will hold the surface flat for a while but the cushioning problem stays, and carpet padding replacement is usually the better fix alongside it.

Buckling that starts right at a doorway or where carpet meets tile is sometimes a transition strip problem rather than a room-wide tension issue. We check whether the transition itself has come loose before assuming the whole room needs pulled tight, and if that's the cause, carpet transition repair addresses it directly.

Stairs stretch differently than open rooms because each step is its own small section. Stair carpet repair and re-stretching uses a different technique than running a power stretcher across a living room, so we treat stairs as their own job.

Local Expertise

Why Carpet Buckles So Often in St. George

St. George summers regularly climb past 100 degrees, and winters are cold and dry by comparison. Flooring materials expand and contract with those swings, and carpet that was installed without enough tension to begin with is often the first thing to show it. Once a buckle forms, it rarely flattens back out on its own.

Low desert humidity works on carpet from a different angle. It draws moisture out of the backing over time, which can shrink it slightly and pull the edges away from the tack strip along the walls. That's one reason we check tack strip condition on every stretching call, not just the carpet itself.

We see the same pattern in homes throughout St. George, Washington, and the surrounding area. A carpet that buckled once because of under-tensioned installation tends to keep buckling until it gets a real power stretch. Saint George's climate makes that first proper stretch matter more than it would somewhere with milder weather.

Before choosing the work, read our carpet repair and stretching cost guide for examples and the details needed to confirm an estimate. If a buckle keeps returning, see why carpet keeps buckling.

Common Questions

Questions About Carpet Stretching in St. George

What causes carpet to buckle or ripple in St. George?

Southern Utah's hot summers and dry winters make flooring materials expand and contract more than they would in a milder climate. Carpet that wasn't stretched tight enough at installation is usually the first to show it once temperatures climb. Dry air also pulls moisture from carpet backing, which can loosen its grip on the tack strip along the walls.

What's the difference between a power stretcher and a knee kicker?

A knee kicker uses body-weight bumps to move carpet a few inches at a time, and the tension it leaves is uneven and short-lived. A power stretcher braces against the opposite wall and pulls carpet tight wall to wall in one motion, which produces stronger and more even tension. We use a power stretcher on every job, including closets and single rooms, and we do not use knee kickers.

Do you replace tack strip, or just stretch the carpet?

Both, when needed. Tack strip replacement is part of the job if a section is rusted, broken, or has pulled away from the subfloor, because a fresh stretch against bad tack strip won't hold. We check every strip along the wall before we re-tack.

How long will my room need to be empty?

Most single rooms take 45 minutes to an hour and a half once the space is clear. We can move light furniture as part of the visit, but large pieces and closets need to be cleared beforehand. There's no drying time, so furniture can go back the same day.

How long does a carpet stretch last?

A power-stretched carpet typically stays flat for years under normal household conditions. The most common reason a stretch fails early is that it was done with a knee kicker instead of a wall-to-wall power stretch. If a buckle keeps coming back in the same spot, tack strip condition is usually the reason.

Can you stretch and clean my carpet in the same visit?

Yes. Many carpet stretching jobs include carpet cleaning in the same appointment, since the furniture is already moved. Mention both when you request a quote and we will price the stretching and the cleaning together.

How much does carpet stretching cost in St. George?

The listed starting rate is $1 per square foot, with stair stretching at $15 per step and a $110 minimum on most booked visits. Measure the room or area being stretched, not just the wrinkle. The calculator gives a planning estimate; furniture access, carpet condition and any additional repairs affect the confirmed quote.
